In the absence of physical closeness, how do you build a narrative and sustain the love that you have with someone else through just words or other snippets of communication?
Loving Long-Distance is a project that explores these communications through a video series and an app.
Follow @lovingLDWe want to produce a video web series to tell the stories of two individuals and their attempts to bridge physical distances with written and verbal accounts. The series will start with the story a Vietnamese couple in the 1970s and their 9-year-long letter exchange between war-torn Saigon, Vietnam, and Hannover, Germany.
We're hoping to tell more stories like this — like those of a deported mother and her child, or of the professional couple that is pursuing exciting careers in different places. We will create an app that helps you revisit the stories and memories you shared with a loved one via emails, chat messages, photos and Facebook likes through an interactive timeline.
We would also like to share stories of how people survived being in long-distance relationships — romantic as well as platonic ones.

Lam Thuy Vo is a multi-platform storyteller and interdisciplinary journalist who leads a team of coder-reporters and covers poverty-related issues at Al Jazeera America. Previously, she has explained economic issues using graphics and multimedia for NPR’s Planet Money and led video operations for the Wall Street Journal in Asia.
Susan E. McGregor was the Senior Programmer on the News Graphics team at the Wall Street Journal Online before leaving to join the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia Journalism School in 2011.
Ana works as a full-time front-end developer at Siberia. Previously, she’s produced documentaries with Al Jazeera’s Faultlines and Vice.
